Buffalo Trace is one of the most popular distilleries in America, they have a huge name sake, long line of history as well as some of the most popular brands in the industry. My blind tasting was a pretty hefty line up. Buffalo Trace is a great brand that I would recommend to anyone as they have a style for all different bourbon drinkers. They also have a lot of harder to find highly allocated bottles in their brands which creates a buzz around them. I had a chance to visit Buffalo Trace in November 2020, and the property is pretty amazing, everyone’s heard the stories about the off limits, no photo rick houses and buildings which just adds to the BT mystique.
Below is the tasting in the order that everything was given and to the right is my ranking, I also included the proof of the bottle.
1. Oakey, smoke flavor with mild spice. Nose Butter scotch with vanilla. #2 Blantons (93 Proof)
2. Bitter, “blah” aftertaste, nose: caramel #7 Elmer T Lee (90 Proof)
3. Slight bitter, nutty low to no smokiness or spice. Nose Floral #4 Buffalo Trace (90 Proof)
4. Low flavor, lots of burn. Nose: Vanilla #5 EH Taylor (100 Proof)
5. Oakey Nutty, Slight bitter. Nose: Brown Sugar #3 Weller Special Reserve (90 Proof)
6. Kiwi and Ethanol taste. #6 Eagle Rare (90 Proof)
7. DELICIOUS, Spicy, bold, full flavor. Hands down #1 Stagg Jr (130.2 Proof)
